Adoption celebration ideas

If you’re looking for unique adoption celebration ideas that reflect just how far you’ve all come, creating something beautiful together that will mean so much, long into the future, why not commission a photo book text from Portraits in Prose?

Any adoption has so many stories wrapped up in it: the life experiences of the child or children in question…the journey of the adopter/adopters and all their reasons why…the perspectives of any close family members or friends in support…and of course their joint story, how they have all become the new family that they now are.

My name is Hannah Wroe Gill, I’m a West Yorkshire-based writer with 15 years’ experience and I create bespoke photo book texts celebrating the milestones of life. I work for people all over the world: clients who take my text and combine it with their own photos within a photo book of their design. Geography is no barrier as I don’t need to be physically present at any point.

Once I’m booked by an adoptive family I start by getting to know them a little better, so I can understand what kind of writing and overall text might suit them best. Then, once we’ve agreed an outline to work to, I create bespoke questions for however many participants have been selected. This usually includes the parents who have hired me, but might also involve their children (depending on age and appropriateness) as well as other loved ones.

It’s a wonderful way to press pause and take stock, capturing everyone’s emotions and insights in their own words. I then write the family’s photo book text with those words, interweaving them all into one whole narrative in whatever ways suit our remit. There might be themed sections, for example, with everyone’s words combined, interspersed with individual quotes or shorter passages written from more specific viewpoints. You can see some examples of my Portraits in Prose writing here.

Adoptive families have often become so used to being scrutinised, but this is a much gentler and often restorative process, focusing on the things that matter most to them and led at their own pace. It’s no longer about having to jump through endless hoops or proving this or that, it’s about saying ‘This is who we are now, this is what we mean to one another and this is what we want our future to look like’.

This permanent record can then be shared and enjoyed again, and again, and again, reaffirming those all-important bonds even further every time.
